LG flexes roll-up TV as screens start to bend

Electronic displays that fold, roll and bend have finally arrived after years of development, and tech firms are touting the technology as a potential source of growth and new applications.

At the Consumer Electronics Show on Monday, South Korean giant LG unveiled its ultra-high definition television that rolls into and out of a base stand and can be furled and unfurled on demand.

“It brings freedom of design to space, without the limitations of a wall,” LG senior vice president of marketing David VanderWaal said while introducing the OLED TV R.
A demonstration showed that the 65-inch (165 centimeter) screen could disappear completely into the base, extend just part way to display photos, act as a control screen for smart devices, or rise completely for full viewing.

Global tech show to celebrate innovation amid mounting concerns

LG did not disclose pricing for the roll-up television.

Chinese startup Royole meanwhile showed off what it claimed is the first foldable smartphone, which can fit into a pocket but unfold into a full-sized tablet computer, which is available in China and now is offered in the US for $1,300.

“People want mobility but they also want large screens,” Royole founder Bill Liu told a news conference as he showed the recently launched FlexPai device.

“It’s really a combination of a smartphone and tablet.”

Other device makers are expecting to introduce foldable handsets this year, but Liu said the technology using superthin layers with nano-sized sensors offered a lot more than just more convenient phones.

Royole showed how the same flexible displays could be used for automotive dashboards, wearables, and for various other commercial and industrial uses.

“We see this as the next generation of human-machine interface,” Liu said.

“It can change the way we connect to everything.”

Royole says its flexible sensor technology can be adapted for a variety of touchscreen applications with improved performance and lower costs than traditional screens.

Royole and LG were among the firms making media presentations ahead of the official opening of the January 8-11 Las Vegas event.

The two announcements could portend a wave of new products from tech firms this year and could offer a spark to a smartphone sector that has seen sluggish growth over the past year.

CES features 4,500 exhibitors across 2.75 million square feet (250,000 square meters) of exhibit space showcasing artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, smart homes, smart cities, sports gadgets, and other cutting-edge devices. Some 182,000 trade professionals are expected.

Robot teachers invade Chinese kindergartens

GlobalData research director Avi Greengart said the roll-up television appears “cool” and offers “unique technology.”

“Foldable phones is going to be a big trend this year,” Greengart said, noting that most of the new product announcements of that ilk were likely to be saved for the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Samsung is widely believed to launch a folding handset sometime this year, possibly at the Barcelona event.

Greengart said he expected the challenge to folding smartphones to be on the software side, not with the displays since applications will have to be designed to adapt to going from phone to tablet screen sizes.

Bilal Ashraf to host 2019 World Soccer Stars starring Kaka, Figo

The stage is set for the Brazilian legend Ricardo Kaká and Portuguese icon Luis Figo to visit Pakistan this month for TouchSky Group’s (TSG) World Soccer Stars 2019 event that will take place in Karachi and Lahore.

The duo will arrive in Pakistan on January 10.

TSG has signed actor Bilal Ashraf as the official host for World Soccer Stars 2019 (WSS 19), where the event will serve as a platform that will see two of the biggest names in football’s history play for the first time in Pakistan.
Football legends Kaka, Figo to arrive in Pakistan on Jan 10

According to the press release, WSS 19 aims to uplift football in Pakistan and will see use of interactive coaching clinics that will be assessed by some of the best international footballers as well. It will also offer a gateway to football talent at grass-root level to recognise their skills.

While Pakistani fans are thrilled to see the biggest names in football to visit the country, Ashraf picked his favourite moments of the two stars.

“I think one of Figo’s favourite goals/moments for me was watching this game which was in 2000. It was against England… Portugal versus England. Figo was literally like one-man show, taking the ball all the way, he had taken several shots from really far away,” Ashraf told The Express Tribune.

He recalled his favourite moment of the Brazilian legend too: “And Kaká had this fantastic goal against Croatia in 2006 which I do remember so yeah, I mean there are tons of favourite moments but these are the best ones that I remember.”

All eyes will be set on Ashraf too as the host and many football fans would want to be in his shoes as he will be interacting with Kaká and Figo up close and personally.

Ashraf said that he will be preparing for WSS 19 by brushing up his football skills too, and he is not at all nervous.

“To be honest, of course, I would be happy than being nervous. First of all I need to brush up my football skills,” said Ashraf. “I do play football once in a while but, yeah, and that is something that I need to do. Apart from that, I know the players will be playing against me, so I hope and I wish that I can learn some tips from them. The idea is more of to bring football home, to Pakistan, and something new and exciting for everyone.

“And I am extremely excited, I mean, Kaká, Figo, massive, massive football players. It is going to be great, I’m looking forward to it, it is something I haven’t done before, so it is great opportunity to see these guys up close and personal, and to see how they are as people, of course we all know how they are as players, but to interact with them on a personal level is what I’m looking forward to.”

He added that WSS is a great initiative that will push football up the ladder, as Pakistanis follow football World Cup and leagues religiously, but more so football is an accessible sport, all a fan and an aspiring player needs is a ball, and everyone plays football. The passion for football is impressive like it is in Lyari, Karachi for example.

But he was quick to say that WSS 19 will inspire the youth further and bring positive change for Pakistan although Pakistanis do not follow the national or international level as much.

“It is great for all those people who are aspiring to be footballers, all those who would like to have association with football, it is going to bring positive change for Pakistan. I think it is going to take some time, but it is headed in the right direction with the WSS,” said Ashraf.

The international event is the brainchild of UK-born Ahmer Kunwar. He is the CEO of TSG.

WSS 19 is not just a sporting event, but a platform which will catapult Pakistan to international markets and promote the country’s soft image in the process.

The press statement also added that with a series of international matches from April 26-29 taking place in Lahore and Karachi, World Soccer Stars promises to be the greatest football spectacle in Pakistan.

Football fever will be at an all-time high in Pakistan as other global players will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Earlier, Kaká and Figo had sent out messages to Pakistanis.

Brazil’s 2002 World Cup winning squad member, Kaká had said in his message, “I am delighted to visit Pakistan and play an instrumental role in promoting and helping football in the country. I have never been to Pakistan so I am really excited to come and play football whilst helping unearth hidden talent.”

While Figo wished Pakistanis a happy new year in Urdu in his video, “It’s exciting to see another emerging country in Asia embrace football.  I’m certain in a population of 220 million there must be huge potential waiting to emerge into the international scene.”

Qualcomm enforces ban to halt some Apple iPhone sales in Germany

Qualcomm on Thursday took steps to enforce a court order banning the sale of some iPhone models in Germany, a move that will likely see Apple pull those iPhone models from its German stores.

The US chipmaker posted bonds of 1.34 billion euros (1.21 billion pounds) as part of a legal requirement by a German court, which found on December 20 that Apple had infringed Qualcomm patents on power-saving technology used in smartphones.
Apple had earlier said it would pull iPhone 7 and 8 models from its 15 retail stores in Germany when the order came into force. That order took effect when Qualcomm posted the bonds.

Apple cuts outlook, sees 'challenges' in China

Apple cut its revenue outlook for the latest quarter Wednesday, citing steeper-than-expected “economic deceleration” in China and emerging markets. The rare revenue warnings from Apple suggested weaker-than-anticipated sales of i Phones and other gadgetry, in part because of trade frictions between Washington and Beijing.

Apple shares slid some 7.6 per cent in after-hours trade on the news.
The company slashed its revenue guidance for the first fiscal quarter of 2019, ended December 29, to $84 billion — sharply lower than analyst forecasts averaging $91 billion.
“While we anticipated some challenges in key emerging markets, we did not foresee the magnitude of the economic deceleration, particularly in Greater China,” Apple chief executive Tim Cook said in a letter to investors.
