Malaysian startup develops a 'Halal' web browser

A Malaysian startup is meeting the demand for a new browser in compliance with Islamic values and privacy concerns.

SalamWeb is a mobile and desktop browser designed to deliver a friendly web experience for Muslims. The app includes messaging, news and other features.

According to Hasni Zarina Mohamed Khan, the managing director at Salam Web, the app is mainly being used in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Google launches AI-driven audio news feed

“We want to make the internet a better place,” Hasni Zarina said. “We know the internet has the good and the bad, so SalamWeb offers you a tool to create this window that lets you go to the internet to see the good,” said Hasni Zarina as quoted by Bloomberg.

The goal is to eventually capture 10 per cent of the 1.8 billion global Muslim population. Khan has pointed out challenges she faces as other leading technology companies such as Google and Facebook are under scrutiny for spreading fake news and releasing information.

Google launches free Wi-Fi hotspots

“We’re promoting universal values — although SalamWeb is targeted to Muslims, it can be used by anyone,” Hasni Zarina said. “The internet can be a harmful place. It’s obvious that we need an alternative.”

SalamWeb heavily relies on community-vetted content that is marked appropriate with warning signals appearing to users when they land on websites containing gambling and pornographic content. There are also specific functions available on the website such as the Qibla direction and prayer timings.

Army hopes Kabul will focus on TTP, Da’ish after restoration of peace

As the United States and the Taliban are closing in on a deal to end the 17-year-long war in Afghanistan, the Pakistani military hopes that after the restoration of peace, the Kabul administration would act against the groups using the Afghan soil as a springboard for launching attacks in Pakistan.
Pakistani security officials have long said that the outlawed terrorist groups – especially the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the Khorasan franchise of Islamic State, also known by its Arabic acronym Da’ish – orchestrate and mount attacks in Pakistan from their sanctuaries in Afghanistan’s border regions.
http://www.siyasat.pk/siasi-discussions-f3.html
Most deadly terrorist attacks in Pakistan have been traced to eastern Afghanistan, where the TTP and Da’ish maintain safe havens in the areas where Kabul has no writ.
In a first, Taliban, US publicly admit ‘progress on vital issues’ in talks
“We hope that after the war ends [as a result of the ongoing reconciliation process] Afghanistan will be able to focus on groups like the TTP and Da’ish, which carry out attacks in Pakistan. Afghanistan should then focus on eliminating these threats to Pakistan,” the chief military spokesperson, Major General Asif Ghafoor, said in an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune on Sunday.
He said Pakistan wished for the success of the reconciliation process. “Pakistan is relatively peaceful but if your neighborhood is disturbed, it will have an impact on you,” said Maj-Gen Ghafoor, the director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Before the fence had been erected, terrorist groups used to take advantage of the porous border between Pakistan and Afghanistan and sneaked in to carry out attacks on Pakistani border posts and villages, he said.
“Our area is under control now but the Afghans don’t have control on their side, which is why the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) came up with the idea of fencing the border,” the military spokesperson said. “The fence has made it difficult for terrorists to cross the border. It has stopped cross-border terrorism and physical attacks are coming to an end.”
Pakistan deserves credit for US-Taliban peace talks: FM Qureshi
Last year, the military said that it would complete fencing the 2,611 kilometres long border by the end of 2019 at a cost of $550 million. The pair of nine-foot wire fences, with a six-foot gap, and topped with barbed wire, runs along rugged terrain and snow-capped mountains as high as 12,000 feet.
Maj-Gen Ghafoor also spoke about the concerns voiced by the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM). “Wherever [military] operations take place, people see pain and suffering [as a collateral consequence]. A war has been ongoing [in Pakistan] for the last 20 years,” he added. “If a kid is 20-year old today, he has only seen war in his lifetime.”
The military spokesperson said that in the post conflict environment it was the state responsibility to assuage the genuine grievances of people, “but you cannot take matters of the state in your own hands”.
He added, “Whatever the problems, they are to be solved here locally as you have to live here. These problems cannot be solved in Karachi or outside the country. If you are interested in finding a solution, talk to the local leadership and the army.”
Pakistan closes consulate in Mazar-e-Sharif after terror bid foiled: FO
The PTM has been staging rallies and public meetings in different cities of the country to rally support for its demands, though some of them have already been addressed.
“It is the responsibility of the state and also our responsibility as an instrument of the state to solve these issues. There are genuine concerns that need to be addressed. But the solution has to be found through talks not somewhere else.”
When asked about the merger of FATA with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Maj-Gen Ghafoor said that being a Pakistani, he was very happy to see FATA becoming part of Pakistan. “These areas [FATA] were known as ‘no-go areas’,” he added. “The merger would bring dividends for the tribal population in terms of health and education facilities.”
Pakistan to benefit from ‘successful’ US-Taliban peace talks: Fawad
Earlier, tribal people relied on the Jirga system for the resolution of their disputes. Now police will work in these areas as they do elsewhere in the country. And this would bring a feeling among the tribal people that they are equal citizens of Pakistan.
The military spokesperson said that the control of entry and exit points of North Waziristan district have been handed over to the civil administration. “When police come, the law and order situation would also improve,” he added. “Our purpose was to ‘clear, hold, build and transfer.’”
He added that the military was holding the region after purging it of terrorists. Currently, the region is being rebuilt with the help of state institutions and donors, he added. “The locals will enjoy the peace dividends after the transfer phase.”
The military spokesperson called upon the locals to extend full cooperation to the local administration in order to further strengthen it.

Microsoft 'waiting to find out' why Bing went offline in China

Microsoft is still trying to figure out why its Bing search engine temporarily went offline in China, the company’s president said following speculation that it could have been blocked by censors.

The US firm’s Chinese website, cn.bing.com, was accessible again late Thursday, one day after it suddenly went offline, temporarily taking away the most prominent foreign search engine in China.

The disruption raised fears among social media users that it was the latest foreign website to be blocked by China. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter have long been blocked by authorities using a censorship apparatus known as the “Great Firewall”.
“This is not the first time it’s happened. It happens periodically,” Microsoft president Brad Smith told Fox Business News at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

“There are times when there are disagreements, there are times when there are difficult negotiations with the Chinese government, and we’re still waiting to find out what this situation is about,” he said.

Bing’s temporary disruption came as a surprise because the search engine has followed China’s censorship rules.

On Thursday, for example, a Bing search for Liu Xiaobo, the dissident and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who died of cancer while still in custody last year, returned one message: “Results are removed in response to a notice of local law requirement.”

Smith said it was understood that Bing did not have the same legal freedoms in China that it enjoyed in other countries.

“But at the same time, we stick to our guns. There are certain principles that we think it’s important to stand up for, and we’ll go at times into the negotiating room and the negotiations are sometimes pretty darn direct,” he said.

While its rival Google shut down its search engine in China in 2010 after rows over censorship and hacking, Bing has continued to operate in the country, along with Microsoft-owned Skype.

Bing, however, has struggled to catch up to China’s own Baidu search engine, which dominates the market even though many people in the country complain about the quality of its search results.

Smith said Microsoft took seriously its obligations to customers regarding censorship.
“I think what is interesting today is technology and sort of human rights, free expression, these issues are really intersecting and on certain days colliding more than in the past,” he said.

“There are deals that we’ve turned down for things like facial recognition technology because we felt that people’s rights will be put at risk.

“And I think more than ever, tech companies really need to think about these things, they need to be principled and you have to have a little moral courage, in my view, if you’re going to be in this business and really take care of your customers.”

PTI MPA Ramzan Ghanchi shot in Karachi's Timber Market

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and member of the Sindh Assembly Ramzan Ghanchi was wounded on Thursday after a dispute over the water supply in Karachi’s Timber Market.
Ghanchi was immediately shifted to a hospital after being shot in his leg. Police arrested Karachi Timber Market Association (KTMA) President Suleman Soomro and his son Ali Soomro, they are trying to arrest his other son Shahnawaz Soomro as well.
In his statement, Ghanchi told the police that he had an argument with Soomro and his sons late on Thursday night over the area’s water supply.
During the argument, they fired at him and the bullet caught his leg but doctors declared him out of danger.
PTI Karachi chapter President Khurrum Sher Zaman and other party workers rushed to the hospital. On  Zaman’s directives, Ghanchi has been shifted to the orthopedic hospital in Nazimabad.
After the incident, PTI workers gathered outside the police station in Napier Road demanding action against the accused.
‘Sindh needs water’
“A PPP leader injured Ghanchi after a fight last night. All Ghanchi wants is water for the people of his constituency in Karachi. The water board should have taken a decision about the distribution of water in the city,” said PTI leader Firdous Shamim Naqvi.
According to Naqvi, the PPP worker who opened fire at Ghanchi was not arrested.
He said, “It is the eleventh year of the Sindh government and Karachi is still deprived of water.”
“We are ready to cooperate with the provincial government but a water emergency should be declared in Karachi,” said the PTI leader.
Commenting on the state of development works in the port city, Naqvi said, “Sindh government get a share in the budget from the centre for development works but one cannot see any such projects in Karachi.”

Moto G6 Plus, Moto Z3 Now Receiving Android Pie Update

While iOS devices that are compatible with the latest version of the mobile operating system from Apple get their software updates soon after release, it's a different story on the Android platform. Although the Google Pixel devices get their software updates soon after roll out of the newest version, other manufacturers usually take their time to get their updates ready. The latest in this list is Motorola, which has rolled out the Android 9.0 Pie update to two of its phone this week - the Moto G 6 Plus ₹ 15,435 and Moto Z 3 - as per user reports.
The software update for the Moto G 6 Plus was first detailed in a post on Reddit for a device in Brazil. Apart from this, Motorola has also put up the release notes of the update for the Moto Z 3 on its official site. For the mid-range Moto G 6 Plus, the update to Android 9.0 Pie also brings the December Android security patch. For the Moto Z 3, the update brings the January security patch, as well as support for 5G mobile connectivity through the 5 G Moto Mod. Notably, it's uncertain as usual if this is just a 'soak test' by Motorola - the company's term for a limited roll out to iron out bugs, but a wider rollout can be expected soon regardless.
It's worth mentioning here that the 5 G Moto Mod is not on sale yet, and 5G connectivity itself is extremely limited at this stage. However, rolling out software-based support ensures that when the network is more widely available and the Moto Mod itself is put on sale, Moto Z 3 users will immediately be able to make use of the functionality.
For the time being, we don't have word on whether or not the software update is being delivered for Moto G6 Plus users in India - we've reached out to Motorola for comment on the availability, and will update this space when we hear back. The smartphone is available for Rs. 16,399 for the 6 GB RAM / 64GB storage variant, and was launched running Android 8.0 Oreo. As per the change log on the Motorola site, the Moto Z3 brings various additional changes and improvements, including Android Pie-specific features such as adaptive battery, new navigation style and more. Motorola, in November, updated its Moto X4 and Android One-based Motorola One Power to the latest version of Android.

Realme 2 Pro, the right time to enter

Pakistan’s smartphone market has recently seen a surge of new entrants with many International companies finding an untapped marketplace in the country.
The latest entry to join the smartphone bandwagon is China’s Realme.
After success in neighbours India, the Chinese brand has set its eyes on Pakistan. The company sent in their flagship for review purposes and before we venture into the details, here a quick look at its specs.
Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, Adreno 512 GPU with 8GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, the Realme 2 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, Android Oreo OS and a 3500 mAh battery.
Design
The device certainly gets plus points for its design. The full-screen model follows the footsteps of modern smartphone designs with its round edges and slim bezels. A little bulky in its feel, the device’s back has an interesting glass-like effect dubbed as the dewdrop effect by the company.
The 6.3-inch Full HD display owing to its gorilla glass insertion has an overall glossy feel both towards the front and back.
Performance
With 8GB of RAM, the device is definitely poised to do well performance wise. Although the average user may not be able to tell, the device packs a powerhouse in terms of combining the Snapdragon processor and RAM.
Switching between the apps and testing out hardcore games such as PUBG makes you understand the dynamics behind the processor. The graphics accelerator definitely helps with gaming purposes with PUBG being the main beneficiary.
The target audience seems to be the younger generation with an emphasis on the hardware. The Fingerprint sensor is surprisingly pretty smooth with facial recognition installed in the device as well. The UI overall was spread out smoothly in the device and the device was quick in terms of response rates.
In terms of audio, the single speaker isn’t as loud as you would like and remains one of the backward features of the device along with the lack of a USB-C port.
Camera
Diverging a little bit from the performance, the Camera has a decent outcome. A 16MP + 2MP Dual camera with an f/1.7 aperture does pretty well for bright shades. The daylight outcome especially of landscape subject matters was pretty detailed as was the bokeh portrait mode. Blurring out backgrounds, focusing more on subjects and enhancing objects, the camera hits all the right notes. The selfie camera has decent quality as well for all those looking to stream.
For low light pictures, the device struggled a bit but for its price, it has a decent output.
Price
Priced at Rs 43,999 on Daraz.pk, the device is slightly pricy if you consider it a mid ranger. However, in terms of the flagship comparisons, the device is reasonably priced.
Whether being sold exclusively on Daraz helps market the brand more exclusively depends purely on the target audience but for now what matters is whether its the right time to enter Pakistan’s smartphone domain.
The 8GB RAM is arguably its most important selling point. Whether that is enough to sway customers remains to be seen but for now, it is important to understand Pakistan’s average customer likes to get their hands on a flagship and with other flagships becoming more expensive, Realme stands a decent chance.
The company, however, does need to understand that the dynamics of Pakistan’s smartphone market are quite different from foreign markets. The same success model may not work here and Realme has to adjust according to the dynamics of the country. Regardless, there’s a lot of market space to be captured in the country.

LG V 40 ThinQ

LG was the pioneer in ultra wide angle phone photography, but others didn't seem to think it mattered. Well, they're coming to their senses, some (Huawei) quicker than others (Samsung, maybe?). Meanwhile, LG has been guilty of not having a telephoto lens and now that's been fixed too. We don't doubt that eventually, every high-end phone will have all the cameras, but we're still in the realm of firsts.
With so many of them happening recently, we almost got carried away - the V 40 Thin Q is, in fact, the first phone to come with 5 cameras (in addition to the three on the back, there are two more on the front) - hence the Penta Camera moniker. And they are, in fact, 5 distinct standalone cameras - we're looking at you and your 'depth-sensing camera', Galaxy A 9.
Cameras to the side, the 6.4-inch V 40 is the largest-diagonal V-series LG phone, for those keeping records. The must-haves that no longer make headlines include the Snapdragon 845 chip set, 6 gigs of RAM and 64 GB/128 GB of storage which 1. is expandable and 2. opens the possibility for a top-spec V 40 S+ (or something) version with, say, 256 GB.
We'd have liked to see some more battery inside the V 40, and we wouldn't be ourselves if we didn't complain about the dated OS version at launch - Oreo is no Pie, to state the obvious. Also, we're not saying it's that big a deal, but LG could have just kept it simple and spared us the 'Thin Q' part of the model name.

26th chief justice of Pakistan

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa took oath as the 26th chief justice of Pakistan on Friday in a ceremony held at the President House.
Khosa tenure as chief justice would span around 11 months and he will remain the country’s supreme judge till December 20, 2019.
The oath was administered by President Arif Alvi and the ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Imran Khan, Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of the Air Staff Aasim Zaheer, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Supreme Court judges, senior lawyers and other government officials and ministers.
Foreign dignitaries also witnessed the oath-taking ceremony.
Justice Asif Khosa to replace Justice Saqib Nisar as CJP
Born in Dera Ghazi Khan on December 21, 1954, Justice Khosa obtained his law degree from the United Kingdom in 1976. Son-in-law of former chief justice Nasim Hassan Shah, Justice Khosa is one of the top jurists on criminal law.
In his career spanning over 19 years, he has decided about 55,000 cases. The feat is acknowledged as his biggest contribution to the judiciary. Khosa fervently urges clearing backlog of pending cases. He has decided over 10,000 criminal cases since 2014. At present, a few hundred criminal appeals are being heard.
Justice Khosa sets record in deciding criminal cases
In Justice Khosa’s courtroom, there is no concept of adjournment. After hearing arguments, he dictates and announces orders without reserving verdicts. His brand of speedy justice had allowed dozens to be acquitted and released after decades-long imprisonment.
The chief justice has also initiated steps for speedy trials in murder cases in some districts of Punjab.
Justice Khosa was among the Lahore High Court (LHC) judges who refused to take oath under the November 3, 2007 Provisional Constitution Order (PCO). He was elevated to the top court on February 18, 2010.
He has been part of benches deciding high-profile cases and has authored many landmark judgments. Justice Khosa also authored the famous ruling banning the second FIR in criminal cases and the Panamagate verdict.

The 'populist era' of Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar comes to an end

Populist era’ of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar is going to end today (January 17). However, his tenure will be remembered for many years.
The CJP Nisar visibly changed his approach in the last year of his tenure and started a unique’ judicial activism, which was completely different from what he did as superior court judge throughout his 20-year career.
It is also a fact that his judicial activism has overshadowed his previous pro-executive and pro-parliament approach which was also characterized by judicial restraint. Many lawyers describe his judicial activism as a ‘U-turn’ in his approach.
Justice Nisar had believed in political-constitutional supremacy until 2017. But in this year, he emerged as a believer in the judicial-constitutional supremacy.
He had been pro-executive throughout his career but in his last year he became skeptical about powers of the executive.  He had been skeptic about the public interest litigation under Article 184 (3) of Constitution but became a strong proponent of exercising suo motu powers.
As a judge, he had been a non-believer in the basic structure theory of the Constitution and always put faith in the supremacy of parliament.  But later, he started saying the Constitution is supreme, which is to be interpreted by the apex court.
Till 2017, it was believed that Justice Nisar is pro-Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) judge who preferred not to head a larger bench which heard Panama gate case but now he is considered as an anti-PML-N judge.
Till 2017, Justice Nisar was known as a judge who gave proper opportunity of hearing to lawyers but in his last year many senior lawyers avoided appearing before him due to his allegedly rude conduct. Harsh words were also exchanged between Justice Nisar and top attorneys during this year.
He was visibly tough on politicians, media men and top officials. However, no visible change was witnessed in his approach towards the military establishment.
That is why one section accuses him of weakening the civilian supremacy. But other section believes that he exposed corruption of the political elite.
Perhaps it was first time in the judicial history of Pakistan that a CJP heard cases also on weekends. Water, health, education and population control were his main priorities. Likewise, the CJP conducted unique proceedings in public interest matters at the Lahore Registry.
Justice Nisar not only adjudicated matters related to public interest but also visited different hospitals, jails etc. He also started a campaign to collect funds for the construction of dams. Despite reservations, people appreciate him for highlighting the issue of water shortage in the country.
Last year, the courtroom No 1 always remained packed during hearings of high profile cases, in which several politicians, civil servants and common people appeared.
Decision to remove Bilawal, Murad’s names from ECL to be made after SC judgement: Qureshi
Justice Nisar started his judicial career on May 22, 1998, when he was elevated as a judge of the Lahore High Court. Later he took oath under the provisional constitutional order (PCO) in 2000 after a military coup but refused to take oath on the PCO of November, 2007.
On February 18, 2010, he was elevated to the Supreme Court and took oath as the CJP on December 3, 2016. His career as an SC judge can be divided into different phases.
Justice Nisar’s elevation to the SC was a dramatic one. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) led government had appointed him as the LHC chief justice and elevated Khawaja Sharif in the apex court without consent of the former CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry.
However Justice Nisar refused to become the LHC chief justice. Subsequently, the PPP government withdrew its decision and directly elevated him to the SC with consent of the CJP.
During Justice Iftikhar era (2009-13), when the judiciary was assuming powers of all other institutions, Justice Nisar had raised a voice of dissent.
Unlike other judges, Justice Nisar wanted to set parameters for public interest litigation under Article 184 (3) of Constitution but unfortunately he also exceeded jurisdiction as the CJP.
Several questions were raised about composition of benches in high profile cases during his tenure.  Even some judges openly opposed exercise of public interest jurisdiction by him.
Approach toward parliament
When a 17-judge full court took up the 18th Amendment case in 2010/11, only Justice Nisar and Justice Asif Saeed Khosa openly endorsed the constitutional amendment about changing the procedure of judges’ appointment.
Due to their opposition, Justice Chaudhry had referred the matter to the parliament with few recommendations to change the procedure of judges’ appointment. Likewise, despite opposition of then CJP, Justice Nisar had also written dissenting note in judges’ pension case.
In 21st Constitutional Amendment case, Justice Nisar wrote that ‘basic features’ doctrine should not be adopted and made part of the constitutional law of Pakistan. He said the ultimate power should flow not from the pens of judicial appointees, but from the elected representatives of the people of Pakistan.
“A powerful judiciary is not necessarily an independent judiciary. And conversely, an independent judiciary is not necessarily a powerful judiciary,” he had noted.
Change his approach
However, his approach visibly changed last year, when he did not endorse the parliament’s law, which paved way for Nawaz Sharif to head his party after his disqualification. He headed the larger bench which supported lifetime disqualification of lawmakers under Article 62 (1) (f).
Later, suo motu was taken on the victory of senators, who were holding dual nationalities. The matter remained pending for several months. In October, when the PTI got majority in Punjab, the apex court disqualified two PML-N senators Haroon Akhtar and Sadia Abbasi for holding dual citizenship
After their disqualification, the PTI was successful in getting both the seats. Contrary to the Election Act 2017, the apex court on June 5, 2018 restored almost all information omitted in the nomination forms approved by parliament.
Justice Nisar also gave hard time to politicians. All chief ministers and some ministers were summoned by him. Unlike his predecessors, Justice Nisar did not hesitate to summon political leaders over matters relating to bad governance.
Several lawmakers and media men like Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, Senator Azam Swati, Amir Liaqat, Dr Shahid Masood, Arshad Sharif and Mir Shakil Rehman threw themselves at the mercy of court by tendering unconditional apologies in different matters.
Approach to military establishment
Justice Nisar remained almost consistent in his approach to the military establishment during his tenure as the top judge. Though he focused on the enforcement of fundamental rights last year, he could not resolve missing persons’ issue.
The SC’s 2010 verdict in Macro Habib case could not be implemented. Asghar Khan case is still pending.  His opponents always propagated that he had some understanding with military establishment. However, he asked the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to vacate a road.
Justice Nisar toward political parties:
When he became the CJP, it was claimed that he was a PML-N judge and he should not sit in the Panamagate larger bench. That was why he avoided sitting in the larger bench. While hearing Hanif Abbasi case, he also maintained balance and showed restraint.
After delivering his famous December 2017 speech in which he had called judiciary as ‘baba rehmatay’, Justice Nisar emerged as a different judge who made a legacy by taking populist decisions.
Subsequently, he was tagged as an anti-PML-N judge. The PML-N workers ran a campaign against him on social media.
The PTI leaders like Imran Khan, Usman Buzdar, Zulfi Bukhari got relief from his bench.  Though several proceedings were initiated against the PPP leaders the party remained generally satisfied with him as he ordered to exclude names of the PPP chief and Sindh chief minister from a JIT report. The matter is still pending.
Cases were also registered under Anti terrorism Act against the PML-N and the PPP workers for using derogatory language against Justice Nisar.  It is still debatable whether Justice Nisar restored dignity of judiciary after taking coercive actions against dissenting voices.
Justice Nisar and media
The CJP also took interest in media affairs. He also gave interviews to a few media persons towards the fag end of his tenure. He also took up matters related to media ads, rating and salaries issue.
Unlike Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, Justice Nisar did not spare TV anchors and reporters allegedly misreporting. However, he wrapped up proceedings against them after they tendered unconditional apologies.  He also initiated proceedings over the delay in the salary of media men. He also facilitated beat reporters by allotting furnished room in the SC premises.
Investigating agencies
Instead of relying on investigating agencies, Justice Nisar formed joint investigation teams (JITs) to probe into different issued. He relied on the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Bashir Memon to get favorable result in several cases. He even stopped caretaker government from transferring Memon from his post before elections.
Judicial accountability:
Before taking oath as the CJP, Justice Nisar was very concerned about lack of accountability within judiciary. In 2015, he had noted that the judiciary is a powerful institution but no judge is prosecuted in last 50 years.
During his tenure, the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) remained active as one IHC judge Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui was ousted. Likewise, show cause notices were issued to three high courts judges including Anwar Kasi. One section of lawyers, however, is demanding that the SJC’s opinion regarding these judges should be made public.
Appointment of judges:
Despite demands of bar councils, Justice Nisar did not amend the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) rules to end discretionary power of the CJP in judges’ appointment process. In 2017, the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment had noted that the JCP led by Justice Nisar had adopted a ‘pick and choose’ policy in the confirmation of LHC judges.
Pendency increase in his tenure:
Judges decided record numbers of cases in the outgoing year; however, pendency of cases increased during the CJP’s tenure. During his term particularly during the last one year the number of pending cases in the apex court jumped up from 38,129 to 40,987.
However, it is also a fact that the ratio of disposal of cases also increased during his tenure. He himself admitted that he is unable to put his house in order.
Opinion
Top jurists believe that Justice Nisar is leaving two legacies. One is about ‘unprecedented judicial activism’ where he remained arrogant and imbalanced and worked hard for the enforcement of fundamental rights.
The other legacy belongs to his tenure prior to 2017 when he strictly applied laws, rules and regulations and gave landmark verdicts on law points, which will be cited in law books.

France seeks Renault board meeting to replace Ghosn

The French government is moving to dismiss Renault's scandal-hit Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn and has requested a board meeting to consider candidates to replace him, sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
France, Renault's biggest shareholder, had until now supported the company's decision to keep Ghosn in office while he awaits trial in Japan for alleged misconduct at Nissan, the French carmaker's alliance partner he also chaired until his dismissal in November.
But the government, which commands a 15 percent Renault stake and two board seats, has asked the company to convene its nominations committee followed by a full board meeting on Jan. 20 to begin the process of appointing one or more successors to Ghosn, according to three people briefed on the process.
A spokesman for Renault and a French finance ministry official both said they had no knowledge of plans for a weekend board meeting.
Ghosn's Nov. 19 arrest in Japan and swift firing by Nissan have deepened tensions with Renault, which owns a 43.4 percent stake in the Japanese carmaker.
The French move to replace Ghosn follows a decision by the Tokyo District Court earlier on Tuesday to deny the ousted chairman's request for release on bail.
Ghosn has been charged over allegations he failed to disclose close to $80 million in additional compensation for 2010-18 that he had arranged to be paid later. Nissan director Greg Kelly and the company itself have also been indicted.
Both men deny the deferred pay agreements were illegal or required disclosure, while former alliance boss Ghosn has denied a separate breach of trust charge over personal investment losses he temporarily transferred to Nissan in 2008.
Possible successor
Jean-Dominique Senard, who is soon to step down as CEO of tire maker Michelin, is likely to replace Ghosn as Renault chairman, according to two sources.
The French state and its advisers are also considering candidates for the Renault CEO role currently occupied on an interim basis by Ghosn's deputy Thierry Bollore.
Bollore is among contenders for the permanent CEO appointment. Others under consideration include senior Toyota executive Didier Leroy, Elior boss Philippe Guillemot and one other potential candidate, a source involved in the discussions said.
"Philippe Guillemot denies being a candidate for Ghosn's succession," said a spokesman for food services group Elior. "It's possible that people considered him, but no more than that."
Senard could alternatively be appointed chairman and CEO, taking over both of Ghosn's current roles, the source said. "All these options are on the table."
Leroy declined to comment, and attempts by Reuters to reach Senard at Michelin were unsuccessful. Headhunting firms Korn Ferry and Emeric Lepoutre & Partners, which are involved in the executive search, could not be reached after hours.
Internal debate
French officials had said Ghosn should be kept in office unless it became clear he would remain "incapacitated" for much longer, also hinting that Tuesday's court decision would be an "important development".
Two senior French finance ministry officials were travelling to Tokyo on Tuesday for talks with Nissan stakeholders aimed at stabilizing the alliance with Renault, daily Le Figaro reported.
Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa said in a Monday interview he expected Renault to back the Japanese carmaker's ouster of Ghosn when its board of directors were finally given full access to the findings of its internal investigation.

Samsung to launch India-first smartphones to counter Chinese rivals

Samsung plans to launch a budget smartphone series in India ahead of a global release, aiming to regain ground ceded to Chinese rivals such as Xiaomi in the world’s second-biggest mobile phone market.
The South Korean company’s Indian market share by shipments has lagged Xiaomi’s in two of the three 2018 quarters for which data is available, according to technology researcher Counterpoint.
The three new M-series phones, which Samsung plans to sell only through its website and Amazon.com’s Indian operation, will help the company to double online sales, the head of Samsung’s Indian mobile business told Reuters.
“The M series has been built around and intercepted around Indian millennial consumers,” Asim Warsi said, adding that the phones will be rolled out globally after the Indian launch at the end of January.
He declined to give specifics but said that online sales account for a double-digit percentage of the company’s overall mobile phone revenue.
Samsung’s mobile phone sales in India touched 373.5 billion rupees ($5.3 billion) in the 12 months to end-March 2018, according to regulatory filings sourced by paper.vc, a business intelligence platform.
The India-made phones, priced from less than 10,000 rupees ($141.80) up to 20,000 rupees, will carry chunkier batteries and features such as quick charging, Warsi said.
Samsung unveils Galaxy Note 9 to reverse disappointing sales
Samsung has been sharpening its focus on India, home to more than a billion wireless subscribers and where roughly 350 million users still do not use smartphones.
Last year it opened what it said was the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Indian capital New Delhi as well as its biggest mobile phone store globally in Bengaluru.
“A lot of our insights, R&D and developments for consumers in India … they have great connect with many other consumers in many other parts of the world,” Warsi said.
Samsung’s Indian business sells its phones through 250,000 retail outlets and more than 2,000 exclusive stores, with support offered by 2,000 service centers.
